Prague’s New Contemporary Art Gallery

From pop up shops to exhibitions, Louise Beer has finally opened one of the first expat-owned contemporary art gallery in Vinohrady. The PragArtWorks Gallery includes pieces from famous Czech artists, like Vaclav Blaha, Pavel Roucka, and David Strauzz, and up-and-coming artists.

The Canadian-born art collector moved to Prague in 2002 with her husband, where she fell in love with the city and its contemporary art scene. Through auction houses and charity events, Beer found many of the artists that are featured in PragArtWorks, including Pavel Roucka and his family, who later “became like a surrogate family,” to her.

Originally in the hotel business, Beer started her career acquiring art at only 23 years old. In the beginning, she bought art from her friend, Gabriella Schwartz, in installments. Gradually, she amassed the art collection she has today while keeping the many of the first pieces she’s ever bought. “I’d be very, very sad to let go of any of it,” she said, referring to her first art collections, “but it’s always good to know they’re there if you’re ever in a situation that you’d have to sell.”

The art collector encourages the younger generation to start gathering art in their 20s and 30s as she did. The key for younger people looking to join this business is to save money and buy in installments, and little by little they can grow their collections. Going to galleries and exhibitions, especially of something new, is also important for young art collectors. In an interview with Linda Stucbartova from Czech Slovak Leaders, Beer recommends visiting Dox, Rudolfinum, and Gemma art galleries, just to name a few.

Czech art has been relatively untouched by the rest of the world, which makes it cheaper but also more unique. Beer is excited for this next step in her career, “I know I have a great feeling that it’s going to be that it’s going to be a successful business because I think there’s a niche market.”
